With over 250 lakes and ponds the Lakes Region certainly lives up to its name. Winnipesaukee is the largest with 180 miles of shoreline dotted with vibrant waterfront communities each with its own unique character such as Wolfeboro, the oldest summer vacation spot in America, Weirs Beach with its boardwalk and family amusements, Meredith with its great restaurants, boutique shops, and marina, and Center Harbor home to the M/S Mount Washington Cruise Ship. Boating, swimming, and fishing rule for activities but there are so many ways to appreciate the beauty of this lake such as an easy hike up Rattlesnake Mountain, a visit to Castle in the Clouds for a tour of the castle, or lunch at the Carriage House restaurant overlooking the lake, ziplining at Gunstock Mountain Resort in Gilford.
Just north of Winnipesaukee is Squam Lake, made famous in the movie “On Golden Pond”, and with luck you will see the resident pair of Bald Eagles while cruising or kayaking among the islands. For more wildlife viewing or a lake cruise visit the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness. To the west grab the picnic basket and beach towel for a trip to Wellington State Park on the shore of Newfound Lake one of the deepest and clearest lakes in the state. While there be sure to stop at the Haunting Whisper Vineyards in Danbury, home to Ragged Mountain Ski Resort for a wine tasting. For quieter pastimes a relaxing day at a spa, a concert at Bank of NH Pavillion venue, a play at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse or a day of shopping at the Tilton Outlets.
